Welcome to my first ever KitLit Blog Hop hosted by the fabulous folks at Mother-Daughter-Son Book Reviews and Youth Literature Reviews!
What’s the idea of the blog hop? Simple – to find quality literature for kids. The Hop is designed for kids under 18 and there is a great list of participants.
In an age where people are constantly worried about kids reading (will they read, do they read, read paper, ebooks, what about all that screen time?), I think the challenge is to find quality material. At least, that’s my challenge as a parent of two tweens (one almost a teenager – yikes!).
Since my husband and I are both bibliophiles, you wouldn’t think this is hard. But despite the (literally) hundreds of titles on our shelves, I still hear, “There’s nothing to read.”
Part of this is taste. My daughter likes dystopian, vampires, and books along the lines of Pretty Little Liars. My son is not a huge reader, but he likes mythology, such as Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series.
The challenge is how to find similar books – similar enough that the kids will give them a chance. Sure, there are bookstores. You can search Amazon. But how do you find recommendations, how do you know which ones are worth the money?
The list below should help in the search.
As part of the hop, I am giving away copies of Power Play, the first book in the Hero’s Sword series to fifteen winners (one entry per person, please). Just leave a comment on this post and answer this question: What’s your favorite childhood book memory?
Good luck and have fun checking out all of these awesome sites!
For my fifth Christmas, my parents gave me a leather bound book of children’s stories and poems. To this day, I can still see the drawings and remember the stories. My favorite is The Tale of Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash. “Belinda lived in a little white house,
With a little black kitten and a little gray mouse, And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon, And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon.”
That is awesome. =)
I’m going to pass on joining in (lack of time) but I’ll try to visit where I can.
Really that’s all that’s required. Hope you have a few minutes to poke around and find something interesting.
Thanks for the chance to win. I use to spend the summer reading Nancy Drew books and floating in my Moms pool.
I loved Nancy Drew! I had all of the hard-covers – still do. They were what I cut my mystery-reading teeth on.
Thanks for stopping by!
So glad you could join in the hop and I hope you have a great book week. Cheers Julie Grasso
Thanks, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens!
My favorite childhood book memory is going to the library everyweek with my mom and getting to check out a bunch of Babysitters Club and Goosebump books.
I loved the library. I could walk there from home or school, and they always had fun stuff in the summer. And I remember browsing through an actual card catalog – you know, full of cards! LOL I read the Babysitters Club, not that my parents understood why (which is why I try not to get on my daughter’s case about some of her choices).
Thanks for stopping by!
I dont know if i have any one specific memory. I know growing up I always had a book in my hands. I would walk to the bus stop reading all the way until we got to school. Luckily my 3 girls all inherited my love of books.
Sorry for the delay – I was at a conference all week.
That’s awesome your kids love books. My daughter (the almost-teen) is a big reader. Her brother is kind of spotty, but we’re working on it!
I’m struggling to think of a book memory. Although remembering our amazing library where I grew up which was in a converted barn – must have been 16th century at least. Although I do remember I was told not to mention Enid Blyton when I went for my interview for my secondary school (age 11 school) but being an obstinate child, I stood up for her adventure stories, because I liked them! I got in…
A library in a barn – wow! I’d have liked to see that.
Good for you for being obstinate. I think I would have been too. =)
Thank you for participating! Sounds like a good book for kids!

Thanks and happy may!
Finally – spring! LOL
Thanks for joining us in the Kid Lit Giveaway Hop. I’m happy to tweet about your giveaway. 🙂
Thanks, Renee!
I think I’ve always grown up around reading and I can’t remember a time before then. A great memory I have is when my friend got into reading! It’s great to have a book buddy!

Yes, it’s always good when you’ve got a book buddy to talk about things with.

We are all voracious readers in our house, but you’re right – “There’s nothing to read” is still heard often. We have overflowing bookshelves, plus kindles, and then there is the city library and the school library. We live at the used book store! I can’t keep my kids – age 12 and 8 – in books! I guess that is a good problem. LOL!
Karen, it sounds like my house! I’ll buy my daughter a couple books, and she’ll bring home four from the library. A week later, “There’s nothing to read.” Are you kidding me? But yes, a good problem to have.

Fave childhood book memory? Easy. Being allowed to go downstairs at the Monroeville Public Library by myself and taking out the Lloyd Alexander Prydain books a million times.
Or buying each new Black Stallion book as I could afford it. (some were gifts. I wrote how I got each one in the cover.)
Or…
Damn. Maybe it’s not so easy.
No, not easy. Because as soon as you think of one, you think of five more!
I got a lovely boxed set of classics as a gift one year. Black Stallion was one of them. I still remember the picture on the cover, it was beautiful.
