Silent Witness

The Laurel Highlands Mysteries #8

Defense attorney Sally Castle already has her hands full with work and planning her upcoming wedding—which her mother is determined to turn into the event of the year—when she encounters a terrified and unsupervised young deaf girl alone in the state park. The girl’s mother is soon found murdered, and Sally is drawn into caring for the child.

Sally’s fiancé, State Trooper Jim Duncan, leads the murder investigation, but instead of working with his usual partner, he is breaking in a new investigator who seems intent on cutting corners. On top of that, he worries the demands of their wedding-planning may drive Sally past her breaking point.

Jim and Sally’s worst fears are realized when the girl, the only witness to the murder, becomes the killer’s next target. Now Sally must do whatever she can to protect the girl before she and the child become the next victims.

What people are saying

“This is a well-written and evenly paced drama that I could not put down, quickly becoming a page-turner. The author set the stage for an all-encompassing mystery that had me immersed in all aspects from ascertaining the identity of both mother and child to the search for the person responsible. As they pursue leads, we learn more about the victim and as such the list of suspects is varied and it’s up to the team to filter out what they know and a possible motive. The visually descriptive narrative pulled me into the telling of this story with engaging dialogue and non-stop action as both Sally and Jim deal with minor disruptions in their everyday situation. As the story moved forward, the suspenseful nature got intense, and the pacing increased as we got closer to the killer’s identity. I also enjoyed snippets of Sally’s wedding preparation in dealing with her *momzilla* who is making the wedding about her and Sally’s interaction with the young girl and the aftermath. Overall, this was an excellent read and again, one of the best books in this enduring series.” – Dru Ann Love, Dru’s Book Musings, 2017 MWA Raven Award winner
